About Clinical Reflexology

What is Clinical Reflexology?

Reflexology is a complementary, holistic therapy. It involves the stimulation of reflexes on the hands and feet that are mapped to the internal organs and glands. Whilst some clients seek reflexology simply for the calming relaxation it promotes, it is also very beneficial to overall well being.

How does Clinical Reflexology work?

Clinical Reflexology works on the principle that different points, or reflexes on the feet, lower leg, hands and ears correspond to the internal organs and other structures of the body.

Our bodies can hold onto the everyday stresses and strains of life and over time these can manifest into daily physical niggles or more systemic illnesses. In reflexology, using the fingers and thumbs to apply pressure to these key reflexes aids circulation and releases blocked energy to help rebalance the body; assisting its natural healing capabilities.

Who is Clinical Reflexology suitable for?

Each treatment is tailored to the individual needs of the client. It is suitable for all ages, from tiny babies to the elderly. It can be used to maintain good health and bring relief to a range of both acute and chronic conditions, including end of life care.

There are specific conditions that are not suitable for reflexology. These include infectious diseases due to the risk of infection to practitioner and cross-infection to other clients, an unstable heart condition (unless working as part of a cardiac team) and thrombosis/DVT. Reflexology improves circulation and can therefore potentially shift the blood clot.

Reflexology may alter the outcome of hormone related medical tests. Therefore, please discuss any imminent medical tests with Maura prior to your appointment.

Will I benefit from Clinical Reflexology?

The effects of reflexology are unique. Therefore, it is not possible to know in advance how you will react to a treatment. Clients often feel very relaxed, less stressed, sleep better and describe improved mood and general well-being which may bring about relief from a wide range of conditions.

What to expect from a Clinical Reflexology treatment?

At the initial treatment, a comprehensive medical and lifestyle questionnaire will be completed. All information is kept confidential. You will be asked to remove your shoes and socks. Maura will recline you in the reflexology chair and ensure that you are warm and comfortable. She will use her thumbs and fingers to apply pressure to the feet, lower leg, hands and ears (dependent on the reflexology treatment chosen) to identify any areas of imbalance. The initial investigatory appointment can take up to 90 minutes.

As a result of the investigatory treatment, a bespoke treatment plan will be created for you with home care suggestions. If you choose to return for further treatments, Maura will discuss your health and wellbeing since your last appointment and amend the treatment plan accordingly. Follow up treatments tend to last around an hour.

Babies and young children have much smaller feet. Treatments are therefore much shorter and more gentle.
